Welcome to the King County Coin Club web-site!

The King County Coin Club (KCCC) was formed in November 2005 to serve the coin collecting community between Seattle and Tacoma. The club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM at the Tukwila Community Center, 12424 42nd Ave. S. in Tukwila.

The club mission is to provide education and entertainment for its members and visitors alike.

Most meetings follow a regular format- Introductions, news, show and tell, refreshments, a special presentation, an auction and a raffle. We have 3 special meetings a year- a summer Barbeque & Bourse in August, a Holiday Social in December and the Northwest Coin Grading Championship, held in November. Since its inception the club has featured special presentations by noted numismatists of national and local repute.

The club holds a coin show in November and also serves as the host club for the Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association annual convention in April. The KCCC is an American Numismatic Association affiliated club.

We have members of all experience levels. Many good friendships have been formed since the club was started. We encourage all interested parties to visit a meeting and check us out. We guarantee you will have a good time!

We hope you enjoy our web-site and thanks for visiting! If you have any questions regarding our club or if you need some coin advice of a general nature call us up at 206-914-6550.

May 2008

Hello Coin Nuts!

Northwest “numismania” has come and gone- the annual PNNA convention is over!  Now with light hearts and lighter pocketbooks we can slip back into our comfortable role as a numismatic backwater. Z-z-z-z-z-z-z…. We had a core group of hustling volunteers that did the convention duties this year. These included

(among others) from left to right - Bill Nehring, Ken Hill, Rick Sexton & Joe Chapman.

We had some new faces this year such as Jon Wasserman. Liz Iverson wore asbestos shoes and put out a couple of minor fires for us. All volunteers who were available were treated to dinner and refreshments by the club on set up night. We thank them as always for coming through. The annual PNNA convention is a clear cut case of the few serving the many and the efforts of the few will not go unrecognized here. We would also like to acknowledge the keynote speakers at the convention, Anthony “Smallforest” Kim and local dealer Dave Schmidt. Dave left his busy bourse table on Saturday afternoon to present a talk on very short notice. Our sincere thanks go to both for their gracious contributions of time and effort. The only real drama during the convention was when our president John Enges high centered the rental truck on the mainline railroad tracks leading into Seattle. John and the rental truck escaped unscathed so all is well that ends well.

Coming up this month for your edification and enjoyment is Al Westerhof (L) speaking on Coins and Currency of the Dutch East Indies. Today of course the Dutch East Indies are called Indonesia. Al is an inveterate collector in this area. His observations should prove illuminating. As a key member of the “Ma Westerhof” gang, Al can be relied upon to bring some excitement to the program, if not a posse.

Our featured item this month is the reverse of so-called dollar HK#283, the official medal from the 1898 Omaha Trans-Mississippi Exposition. Through the magic of photo editing I have raised the perceived grade from an MS63 to a MS67. Does that make me a coin doctor? I don’t think so. A coin doctor is one who performs “wallet-ectomies” on collectors.  I submit to this procedure on a regular basis and can cheerfully recommend it over “botox” injections.

We’ll see you Thursday the 8th. Doors open at 6, meeting begins at 7:00. Remember to bring show & tell and auction items.  Tuxedos and formals are optional.
