Welcome to the King County Coin Club web-site!

The King County Coin Club (KCCC) was formed in November 2005 to serve the coin collecting community between Seattle and Tacoma. The club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM at the Tukwila Community Center, 12424 42nd Ave. S. in Tukwila.

The club mission is to provide education and entertainment for its members and visitors alike.

Most meetings follow a regular format- Introductions, news, show and tell, refreshments, a special presentation, an auction and a raffle. We have 3 special meetings a year- a summer Barbeque & Bourse in August, a Holiday Social in December and the Northwest Coin Grading Championship, held in November. Since its inception the club has featured special presentations by noted numismatists of national and local repute.

The club holds a coin show in November and also serves as the host club for the Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association annual convention in April. The KCCC is an American Numismatic Association affiliated club.

We have members of all experience levels. Many good friendships have been formed since the club was started. We encourage all interested parties to visit a meeting and check us out. We guarantee you will have a good time!

We hope you enjoy our web-site and thanks for visiting! If you have any questions regarding our club or if you need some coin advice of a general nature call us up at 206-914-6550.

KING COUNTY COIN CLUB

June 2008

Hello Coin Nuts!

Welcome to summer, I think. Although the weather has been chilly, our warmest thanks do go out to our friend and loyal gang member Al Westerhof for his detailed presentation on Dutch East Indies coinage last month. We commend Al and hope he resurfaces soon. In the meantime- he went thataway!!

Our program this month will be presented by Greg Smith, the most recent past president of the Boeing Employees Coin Club. Greg’s topic will be Grading Cents 101. Copper crazies will eat this up; they are almost as fixated as those numicidal maniac Barber nuts. Greg can be counted on for positive spin, spirited discourse and good crowd control. Have your loupes at the ready and wear body armor, just in case.

Our feature photo this month shows detail from the Theodore Roosevelt memorial plaque of 1920 by James Earl Fraser. These were cast by the Snead Foundry of Louisville, Kentucky. The Snead foundry was established in 1849. Among other things, the Snead company also made the staircase that runs inside the Washington monument and the bookshelves for the Vatican library. The Roosevelt plaque was the only numismatic item they ever produced. These large 10”X 12” and eight pound pieces are popular items today. This example recently brought $813 on EBay. Upon this plaque is a stirring Roosevelt quote from when he was the police commissioner of New York City which reads:

“Aggressive fighting for the right is the noblest sport the world affords”

Hip-hip to that! Of course, this is provided one has the time as you’re apt to be busy for a while. Want another great Teddyism? How about this- Let’s see you shoot the way you shout.”  This quote comes in handy for use as an all-purpose comeback, suitable for many occasions.

And so in closing- Do fight for the right and bring yourself, your show & tell stuff and your auction items Thursday. It’ll be a bully good time. We’ll shoot the shout a little…

Doors open at 6:00, the meeting starts at 7:00. Don’t miss it or we’ll miss you!
